Pōhaku Stone
The One of the best known traditional Hawaiian surfboards, the alai’a was likely the most common board in pre-contact Hawaiʻi: thin, flexible, and highly responsive, its name means "the path of the fish," reflecting the way it flexes and turns with the surfer and the wave. Prized for its speed and maneuverability, the alai’a remains influential today. One celebrated example is the koa board inherited and ridden by Princess Kaʻiulani.
